Whirlpool Dishwasher F8 E4 error code

Difficulty: Medium · Cost: $0–$200 · Duration: 15–30m

The F8 E4 error means your Whirlpool dishwasher's leak sensor detected moisture in the drip tray at the base of the unit. When this error occurs the dishwasher will start a drain sequence automatically and prevent further operation. Do not turn off the power — keep the door closed while the dishwasher drains. After draining turn off the water supply and press Cancel once to silence the alarm, then press Cancel again to clear the code. Inspect the dishwasher for the source of the leak.

Common causes

  • A water connection point is leaking — supply hose, valve fitting, or drain hose
  • Door seal is damaged or not seating correctly
  • Dishwasher is not level causing water to pool in the drip tray
  • Float switch is not properly connected
  • Excessive suds from dish soap caused water to overflow into the base

How to fix it

  1. 1

Do not turn off the power — keep the door closed while the dishwasher drains automatically

  2. 2

Turn off the water supply valve under the sink

  3. 3

Press Cancel once to silence the alarm then press Cancel again to clear the code

  4. 4

After draining check all water connection points for leaks — supply hose, valve fittings, and drain hose

  5. 5

If recently installed check that the rubber washer is properly seated in all fittings and that connections are hand-tightened plus a quarter to half turn

  6. 6

Check that the float switch connector is properly clicked in

  7. 7

If the drip tray contains water carefully remove it and empty it before resetting

  8. 8

Make sure you are using dishwasher detergent and not dish soap which causes excessive suds

  9. 9
