The Sud or Sd code means your Whirlpool washing machine detected excessive suds and has automatically paused the cycle to extend the rinse time and break down the suds. This is not a fault — the washer is handling the situation on its own by adding water and additional rinse time. The cycle will resume automatically once the suds have dissipated. This is caused by using non-HE detergent, too much detergent, or certain types of liquid bleach containing thickening agents. A kinked or clogged drain hose can also trigger this code.

Common causes

  • Non-HE detergent is being used in a high-efficiency washer
  • Too much HE detergent was added
  • No-splash or easy-pour liquid chlorine bleach containing a thickening agent was used
  • Drain hose is kinked or clogged causing drainage issues that mimic over-sudsing

How to fix it

    Wait for the washer to automatically extend the rinse and resume — this may happen several times

    Do not add more detergent or interrupt the cycle while Sud or Sd is displayed

    After the cycle switch to HE high-efficiency detergent and follow the recommended dosage
