HP Printer (OfficeJet) Paper Jam / 0x6100004a error code

Difficulty: Easy · Cost: $0 · Duration: 10–15m

The Paper Jam message or 0x6100004a error on your HP OfficeJet printer means paper is jammed inside or the print carriage is blocked and cannot move. This error often follows a paper jam warning — even when no paper is visibly jammed, a tiny scrap of paper on the carriage rail can trigger it. Carefully inspect the entire paper path including the carriage area rail at the back of the access door. Even a piece as small as a quarter-inch can cause this error.

Common causes

  • Paper became jammed in the paper path or carriage area
  • A small torn piece of paper is sitting on the carriage rail inside the printer
  • The print carriage is physically blocked and cannot move to its home position
  • The cartridge access door is not fully closed
  • The paper path cover is not fully inserted

How to fix it

  1. 1

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to stop moving

  2. 2

Remove the paper path cover and inspect the entire carriage area — use a flashlight to find even small torn pieces of paper

  3. 3

Check the silver rail at the very back of the carriage area for small paper scraps

  4. 4

Remove any paper, labels, or debris found

  5. 5

Reinsert the paper path cover and make sure it is fully seated

  6. 6

Close the cartridge access door and make sure it clicks fully shut

  7. 7

Remove the ink cartridges then press the power button to turn the printer off

  8. 8

With the printer off unplug the power cord and wait 60 seconds

  9. 9

Reconnect the power cord directly to a wall outlet and turn the printer on

  10. 10

Reinstall the ink cartridges and try printing again
