HP Printer (DeskJet) E4 error code

The E4 error means your HP DeskJet printer has a paper jam. Paper jams most commonly occur in the input tray area, the paper path inside the printer, or inside the rear cleanout door area. Carefully removing all jammed paper — including any small torn pieces — is essential. Do not pull paper forcefully as torn pieces left inside will cause the jam to recur.

Common causes

Paper fed at an angle and became stuck in the paper path
Multiple sheets were fed at once
Wrinkled, torn, or damp paper was used
Paper tray was overfilled beyond its capacity
Paper width guide was not adjusted to the edge of the paper stack

How to fix it

Press the Cancel button to attempt to automatically clear the jam

Open the cartridge access door and gently remove any visible jammed paper

Check the input tray and remove any crumpled or stuck paper

If the paper is not visible from the front turn off the printer and unplug it

Open the rear cleanout door if your model has one and remove any paper from that area

Check the rollers inside for small torn pieces of paper and remove them

Close all doors and plug the printer back in

Turn the printer on and press Resume to continue

If the jam error persists restart the printer
