LG Air Conditioner CH61 error code

Difficulty: Medium · Cost: $0–$100 · Duration: 15–30m

The CH61 error means your LG air conditioner has shut down due to overheating. In cooling mode the outdoor unit has reached a dangerously high temperature, usually because hot air cannot escape from the area around the unit. In heating mode the indoor unit has overheated, most often because a dirty or clogged filter is blocking airflow. This error is a safety protection and will not clear on its own — a manual power cycle is required after fixing the underlying cause. The code may also appear as P4, P6, P7, P8, or CH34 depending on the model.

Common causes

  • Outdoor unit installed in a poorly ventilated enclosed balcony trapping hot air
  • Ventilation window or insect screen around the outdoor unit is closed
  • Clutter or objects piled around the outdoor unit blocking airflow
  • Outdoor unit positioned too low relative to the ventilation window
  • Indoor unit air filter is dirty or clogged restricting airflow during heating mode

How to fix it

  1. 1

If in cooling mode check the outdoor unit — open any ventilation windows or insect screens nearby

  2. 2

Clear any objects or clutter around the outdoor unit to allow hot air to escape freely

  3. 3

If the outdoor unit is on an enclosed balcony consider installing an air guide to direct hot air outside

  4. 4

If the outdoor unit sits below the ventilation window raise it with a stand so it aligns with the opening

  5. 5

If in heating mode remove and clean the indoor unit air filter

  6. 6

Once the ventilation or filter issue is resolved unplug the power cord or turn off the circuit breaker and wait 5 minutes

  7. 7

Restore power to clear the error and restart the unit

  8. 8

If CH61 keeps returning after fixing the ventilation and filter contact a technician for inspection
